The Complete Blueprint for Environmental Graphic Design

environment design

The reuse of these items means that less energy is consumed in making new products and a new natural aesthetic quality is achieved. Traditionally, UX design has primarily focused on human-computer interactions. However, we can scale up the practices of design thinking, user research, product design and interaction design to even larger projects. Now more than ever, designers are called on to rethink infrastructure, education and transportation to create more sustainable models on a national or even global scale.

Technical skills such as mastering 3D modeling tools, understanding material properties, and manipulating lighting are equally important to creating visually appealing and realistic environments. The evolution of 3D environment design is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of artists, designers, and technologists. As technology continues to advance, we can only anticipate more exciting developments and immersive experiences in the realm of 3D environment design.

High Paying Careers for Environment Design Majors

Students who are found to not be prepared for the subsequent years of the Environmental Design program may not take ARCH 253, ARCH 254, ARCH 261, or ARCH 262 or any upper division courses in the curriculum. Former students who have withdrawn after being admitted to the program must be in good scholastic standing for re-admission and will be readmitted on a space available basis only. Former students must contact the School in writing, stating their intent to return, at least two months prior to their return so that a decision can be made regarding space availability. Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may require a non-accredited undergraduate degree in architecture for admission. However, the non-accredited degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree. The School of Architecture offers a four year Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Design undergraduate program which, when combined with our three-semester graduate program, leads to a fully accredited Master of Architecture degree.

User experience designers who work solely on digital products might think sustainability is irrelevant for software or applications. Environmental Design programs offered by schools range from a to a , which is the highest environment design degree you can get. The time it takes to complete a environment design degree varies depending on the program. Meanwhile, social media companies have started to create physical spaces with relevant social media lingo, meme pictures, and graphics to create a certain environment. That environment allows employees and visitors to be a part of the company, share their pictures, and more; thus, creating a better and stronger relationship between the company and the people. Nowadays, environmental graphic design has become a crucial part of companies, stories, and customers.

Your world design encompasses the overall mood as well as the lore (i.e. backstory). From this concept—usually spearheaded by a lead designer)—a top-level map might be created, which generally revolves around the central goal of the playable character(s). For example, the antagonist might be situated in a castle at the most distant point on the map, encouraging exploration of the other locations first.

They must consider factors such as memory usage, draw distance, and performance to ensure that the game’s environments look great and run smoothly. The concept of "environmental" in these programs is quite broad and can encompass aspects of the natural, built, work, or social environments. Our climate coach Michael J. Coren is answering questions about environmental choices in our everyday lives. The Post is tracking a variety of climate solutions, as well as the Biden administration’s actions on environmental issues. It can feel overwhelming facing the impacts of climate change, but there are ways to cope with climate anxiety. For Lowden, building this biodiversity is both a response to climate change and a step in restoring the health and sovereignty of the Acoma people.

Develop an immersive game with these resources

Within these areas it’s not just about human engagement, but how you use graphic design to stimulate their minds. Remember, graphic design in environments can be a powerful psychological tool when used right. Simply put, signage and wayfinding create a visual path through an environment. These are the tools that help people navigate through your space, but they should still feel connected to your brand. These are the primary physical spaces where employees and customers interact on a day-to-day basis.

Climate-smart Indigenous design

Optimization is the final step, ensuring the environment runs smoothly and efficiently on various platforms and devices. Polygon count reduction, texture optimization, and fine-tuning of lighting and effects strike a balance between visual quality and performance. Texturing and shading breathe life into the 3D model, as textures and materials are applied to surfaces, enhancing their realism and visual quality. Lighting design is another crucial aspect, as strategic placement of light sources, adjustments in intensity and color, and the creation of shadows add depth and atmosphere.

When your shoes, water bottle, and gear are ready and waiting for you, there is one less hurdle between you and a good workout. If you walk into any living room in America, where are all of the couches and chairs facing? The screen is the first thing you see when you sit down, no wonder you turn it on when you’re bored. Turn the couches and chairs in your living room, so that they don’t all face the TV. If you’re really bold, unplug the TV and put it in a closet for the next week.

After the high-resolution models are complete, the 3D environment artist will optimize them for use in the game engine. This involves reducing the number of polygons in the models to improve performance and create a smooth gameplay experience. Designing a 3D environment is a meticulous process that involves several key steps to bring virtual spaces to life. From concept development to optimization, each stage contributes to creating visually captivating and immersive environments. These characteristics collectively contribute to creating immersive, visually appealing, and interactive 3D environments in various applications such as video games, virtual reality experiences, architectural visualization, and simulations.

I have authored several lifestyle books, including the critically acclaimed and commercially successful The Life Negroni, and I work as a content strategist and luxury brand consultant at Spinach. For the week, Milan simply buzzed with design activity—the vibrant districts of Brera, Tortona and beyond hosting pop-up installations and exhibits, talks and discussions, and with parties flowing into the night. Brands put out their very best show, but mainly Milan Design Week is about the sharing of ideas, and speculating how design can help better shape our lives. Both individuals and organizations that work with arXivLabs have embraced and accepted our values of openness, community, excellence, and user data privacy. The Civic x IG Instabeach event also included plants and greenery to enhance the beauty of the setting. This event was largely outside, against the backdrop of sunny Malibu beach. The colors and natural elements incorporated were meant to complement that setting. Likewise, the Frieze Los Angeles RUINART event included a minimalist design with natural wood furnishings that drew attention to the woodsy, natural exhibits.

They constructed rock terraces in low-tide lines to increase shellfish production. The gardens also help the clams weather the impacts of a changing climate by moderating water temperature and expanding habitat threatened by rising seas and ocean acidification. After removing the dams and implementing a massive river restoration, the salmon are returning. “The river, in its natural state, had that climate change resiliency built into it,” McCovey said. As climate change drives increased drought and heat in the region, Johnson looks to the knowledge and practices that have survived thousands of years of climate extremes. “Our agriculture is integrated into our cultural belief system that has sustained us for millennia,” he said.

Skills Required to Become a 3D Environment Artist

As important as sustainability is, it’s clear that the effects of climate change are already happening. In that regard “sustainability” is not enough, since that effectively means keeping things the way they are. A physical product might use recycled materials, or be manufactured in a plant that doesn’t use fossil fuels to become more sustainable. It should be designed in a way so it can be reused or repaired, or biodegrade once it is done being useful. A sustainably designed product or service is one that considers the entire lifecycle of the product during development, from manufacturing to disposal. The following options are some of the most in-demand careers related to environmental design.

Meanwhile, the brand gets to leave a lasting impact on the customer if they nail their interactive experiences. That has allowed people to directly interact with brands through video games, VR, AR, videos, and animations. This two-way communication model helps the customers accustom to the brand and helps the brand understand the customers better. You can use doodles, pictures, illustrations, words of wisdom, and more to create a certain mood. Ideally, you want something that has a lasting impact on one-time visitors while not being hard on the eyes of everyday employees. When you’re done, you’ll have created a balanced physical space for all employees; thus, increasing employee satisfaction and engagement while fostering brand loyalty and retention.

Materials have very different conductivity and reflectivity properties that directly affect environmental performance. At the same time, the environmentally designed building must meet much higher comfort and performance levels than vernacular architecture, the model for a less energy-hungry architecture. 3D environment design is the invisible hand that guides players through a game’s world, emotions, and narrative. Enhancing immersion, emotional engagement, and gameplay integration can make a good game great. When executed on a decent level, environment design transforms games into remarkable experiences, leaving players eagerly awaiting their next journey into virtual worlds. This multifaceted discipline combines artistic creativity with technical expertise to construct immersive, visually compelling, and interactive game environments.

The Greeks, Romans and Chinese developed curved mirrors that could concentrate the sun's rays on an object with enough intensity to make it burn in seconds. Services in Puerto Rico can be provided through CEC Engineers & Consultants, LLC. The growth will enable thousands more patients to access the complex care at UCSF Health to meet both current and future demand for care. The hospital will incorporate the latest technologies in diagnostics, robotics and surgical procedures into complex specialty care, including neurosurgery, cardiology, transplant and emergency medicine. Seventy-five percent of global crop diversity has been lost in the past century, further threatening food security as agriculture becomes increasingly vulnerable to climate change. “I like to call traditional ecological knowledge the things my grandfather taught me,” said Michael Kotutwa Johnson, a Hopi dryland farmer and academic.

Environment Production – Part 1 – Planning a Game Environment

Creating 3D environments in video games involves a complex process requiring high skill and attention to detail. The process begins with the concept phase, in which the game designers and artists collaborate to create a visual concept for the environment. This may include sketches, storyboards, and mood boards to help define the look and feel of the environment. Environment artists play a crucial role in the video game industry, responsible for bringing digital worlds to life. They are skilled professionals who specialize in creating immersive 3D environments that players can explore, interact with, and, ultimately, become lost in. It is in our design studios that this philosophy is most clearly demonstrated.

Maya vs Blender: Which is Best for 3D Art in 2024?

Many within architecture, however, refuse engagement with this reappraisal. Its analysis is simplistic, its conviction naive, its physics dubious, and its metaphysics absurd. It’s a haven for the untalented, where ethics replace aesthetics and get away with it. You can check out different EGD examples, design your own samples on an online platform like Pixelied, and see what works. For example, boards that show you different platform numbers in a subway or train station are crucial because they serve as visual cues for the customers.

This stage requires much attention to detail as every object must be carefully crafted to fit into the environment seamlessly. As technology progressed, so did the possibilities of 3D environment design. The advent of more powerful hardware and software brought about a revolution, enabling designers to create increasingly complex and detailed virtual worlds. The introduction of real-time rendering engines and advanced modeling tools allowed for greater realism, enhanced lighting effects, and improved texturing. Briefly defined, architecture is the art and science of designing buildings that provide appropriate accommodation for human activities.

It references both countries' national flags, a circuit pattern (technology) and a leaf (environment) on the wings of a butterfly. I wanted to create a standalone mark for this environmental foundation located in Mt. Hood, Oregon. I first wanted it to be recognizably "environmental", so gave a subtle nod to Mt. Hood in the custom "W" shape without being literal, allowing the leaves to more strongly represent "environment". Drawn in a modern and geometric style to provide lots of versatility -- beautiful in bold full color and stunning in one color as well for use on top of nature photography. Carolina A. Imagine relaxing underneath the shade of a tree in a park, filled with the sounds of running water, birds singing and children playing on a jungle gym. As an environmental design major, you will be prepared to design spaces where people live, work and play. This program teaches students how to use space and construct structures in an ecological sustainable, environmentally safe, and aesthetically pleasing manner.

The environment artist starts the modeling work by establishing the structure and composition of the environments with key elements. An environment artist designs the digital props and backgrounds that make up the environment of a scene where characters interact. In this series, Stéphane Wootha Richard covers his process for creating environment art with 2D and 3D tools. During the first lesson Stéphane gives an introductory look at ZBrush as a creative tool for concept artists. Another challenge is the amount of time and resources required to create a 3D environment.

Beach House Plans & Floor Plans

Bathrooms are possibly one of the easiest rooms to incorporate the beach house interiors trend as the colours just lend themselves so well to the space. Just look to add a few key pieces – coastal style towels, classic motifs like fish and anchors, anything that's made of shells. A porthole style mirror or some rope baskets for bathroom storage can be all it takes to add that relaxed, on-trend feel.

Lift the look with a wooden worktop as a contrast and pick out kitchenware that has a touch of colour to it (more on that next). If you aren't ready to commit to a full on striped sofa, maybe an armchair might be a better idea? We love the Scandi feel of the  Calmsden Armchair, upholstered in Lapland Stripe from Vanessa Arbuthnott. Why not pinch this idea and mix the soft coastal look with more striking pieces like sculptural dark wooden furniture?

The narrow lot posed challenges for the designers, but they created a compact, open-concept floor plan that spans three stories. An open, flowing first floor leads to the bedrooms on the second floor, and the third-floor perch includes a loft and rooftop deck. Hebe joined the Real Homes team in early 2018 as Staff Writer before moving to the Livingetc team in 2021 where she took on a role as Digital Editor. She loves boho and 70's style and is a big fan of Instagram as a source of interiors inspiration. When she isn't writing about interiors, she is renovating her own spaces – be it wallpapering a hallway, painting kitchen cupboards or converting a van.

Sliding glass doors on all three levels connect the house to its beachside setting. On Australia’s remote St. Andrews Beach, Austin Maynard Architects designed a modern-day "bach"—a New Zealand term for a beach shack that became popular during the 1950s. The circular dwelling is clad in silvertop ash, which will develop a patina over time and allow the structure to further blend into its natural surroundings. In Chigasaki, Japan, architect and surfer Kenichiro Iwakiri rehabbed a midcentury cottage by giving it coastal Cali vibes with a colorful, retro aesthetic. Exposed red cedar ceilings, white walls, and a new covered porch give the old bungalow a new lease on life.

Made of steel, concrete, glass, and weathered gray ipe wood, the two-story house is a contemporary contrast to the neighboring bohemian beach shacks. The house is oriented to take advantage of the sun and views with a front facade encased in floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that open up to an expansive front deck. Through these sliders lies the main floor with an open-concept double-height living, dining, and kitchen area and a lofted mezzanine. Coastal houses are called many other types of homes, including beach houses, beach bungalows, beach cottages, or beach condos. After a bushfire burned their original beach shack and property, the homeowners built a brand-new beach house on a precipice overlooking Dunalley Bay in Tasmania. Stuart Tanner Architects designed a safe haven made from steel, concrete, glass, and Tasmanian oak.

Plan: #196-1155

Beach or seaside houses are often raised houses built on pilings and are suitable for shoreline sites. They are adaptable for use as a coastal home house near a lake or even in the  mountains. The tidewater-style house is typical and features wide porches with the main living area raised one level. This concept of creating an entirely new living room in your garden has been really popular over the last few summers and they do look particularly gorgeous. Plan: #168-1155

The beach is a typical vacation destination, and what better way to enjoy your extended stays by the ocean than in your own beachfront home? Whether you’re moving to the beach year-round or you want to build your dream vacation getaway, our beach house plans offer something for everyone. For coastal interiors, the obvious choice to go for is stripes, but we also love the relaxed look of linen bedsheets, in sea-inspired colours – think calming blues, crisp whites and sandy beige. Feeling inspired by all the beach house interiors that floating around Instagram at them moment? Well, hey, we don't think you need to live anywhere near the sea to recreate those relaxed coastal interiors.

Combine the traditional seaside look and the more contemporary, rustic beach house look by keeping with the whole mix of materials thing, but adding in a few hints of blue. We love how this blue carpet looks against the limewashed floor, and the cushions are just the right amount of nautical without venturing into Life's better at the beach territory. Most of the 3,000-square-foot home’s spaces were reconfigured during the renovation. The old screened porch became a brand-new kitchen, expanding the home’s interior footprint.

The best beach houses are designed for unplugging and relaxing—they can’t be fussy or formal. These comfortable retreats excel at casual gatherings, and they also make the most of their surroundings. Perfectly positioned to embrace views, sea breezes, and the light at sunrise and sunset, these beach house floor plans will surely inspire the design of your future seaside getaway. Beach house plans typically have extra-large window designs, decks/porches for enjoying the salt air, and open interiors that bring views deeper inside. They come in all kinds of styles to suit different beachy vibes—Mediterranean beach homes are popular along the Gulf and Florida coasts while cute gabled cottages are preferred farther north, for example.

For the second level, the homeowner embraced a more open-concept floor plan with a loft-like sleeping space that includes an office nook and a large seating area for social gatherings. Just north of Sydney, Australia, on Great Mackerel Beach, the Hart House is Casey Brown Architecture’s contemporary interpretation of the beach shack. Wrapped in a corrugated metal shell to protect it from the elements, the waterfront home is at one with nature—it’s nestled into a rocky outcropping and lush foliage, perfectly positioned to take in ocean views. Don't limit the beach house look to your interiors, get those vibes going in your garden too! String up a hammock, throw down some striped picnic blankets, dot some lanterns and festoon lights around, dig yourself a lake and there you go. If you are after a quick, budget-friendly way to bring in a bit of that seaside charm, pick out a few pieces of of tableware.

To make the 1,600-square-foot home feel larger, the designers used double-height ceilings, expansive glass, and seamless indoor/outdoor connections to their advantage. The 1,500-square-foot circular home is centered around a metal spiral staircase, with a double-height dining room and patio to add volume. The first floor is comprised of open-concept living rooms and utility space. And upstairs, in lieu of walls, the two bedrooms are partitioned off with curtains for privacy.

A quick way to get that coastal look in your dining room is to switch out your dining chairs oooor you could even paint your current ones in a lovely sea blue. Something like Farrow & Ball's Stone Blue or Cook's Blue would work well in a coastal style interior. Inside, the living, dining, and kitchen areas are located in the heart of the home, with bedrooms along the perimeter. Although the home has a compact floor plan, vaulted ceilings give the rooms a lofty, airy feeling, and covered porches extend the living areas outdoors. The single-story 670-square-foot beach house is mindfully positioned on the property to create privacy from the street.

Much like the bedroom above, there's not a sea shell in sight in this gorgeous dining room, but you still get that beachy feel because of the neutral colour palette and all those natural elements. We love the big vase of natural grass as a contrast to all those pale colours; you could obviously source the real thing but Wayfair actually do some pretty realistic looking versions. If your love of coastal interiors goes beyond a few anchors printed on cushions and a shell wallhanging, think about investing in a classic striped sofa as the focal point of your living room. We love this sofa from dfs; the stripe is subtle enough so, if your tastes do change, it could be adapted to suit any style. Well don't need to live anywhere near the sea to recreate those laid back, coastal vibes...

Take the natural, airy elements of a coastal home plan and combine them with the formal touches of Southern colonial design, and you get coastal plantation style. The two aesthetics manage to balance each other so that the typically heavier colonial design choices are lightened with the addition of the breezy coastal design. The 2,271-square-foot home’s ground level houses an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living area that overlooks a pool that runs along the side of the long, narrow house. Buenos Aires-based architect and furniture designer Alejandro Sticotti designed a 2,690-square-foot beach getaway for his family in the small seaside town of La Pedrera, Uruguay.

You can bring some of that coastal style into your kitchen without having to whitewash the entire thing. If you have any glass fronted or open cabinetry use this to display glass jars, small wicker baskets and nice pieces of crockery. Ramp up the seaside feel by adding some driftwood sculptures, rattan lanterns and seagrass wall hangings. If you want to bring some coastal interiors into your home but don't want to fork out for new furniture, try upcycling some of your existing pieces.

Plan: #116-1081

If the more traditional blue and nautical stripes aren't quite your thing but you love the light, airy feel of coastal interiors, a simple neutral palette can be just as effective at evoking those holiday feels. Layer up different weathered coastal colours and add natural materials for plenty of texture and interest. When adding accessories, arrange them in small groups, in a haphazard way, in keeping with the whole informal look.

Plan: #196-1187

Indoor/outdoor living reigns supreme at this beachside dwelling in Sydney, Australia’s North Bondi area. Privacy screens that incorporate lighting and plants were designed by CplusC Architectural Workshop to embrace alfresco living without compromising privacy in the dense city neighborhood. In Santa Monica’s Ocean Park neighborhood, Saez Pedraja Architecture took on the task of designing a beach home for a narrow 25-by-80-foot lot.

A  quick and easy way to get a lovely, light, beach house look is to use paint. Give your walls a lick of a new coastal colour to instantly transform it into a room that just feels like it belongs by the sea. We love this lovely duck egg blue, it works so nicely with creams and wooden accents.

Coastal homes allow you to relax with family and friends and draw nearer to a lifestyle most of us only dream about. The interior layout was completely reimagined by the designers, as they looked to make the floor plan more functional for modern-day living and make the views a priority. The main living areas were restored and streamlined, while a three-bed, one-bath guest wing was added above the original garage and workshop. The L-shaped modular house has a floor plan with two distinct wings—one for living and the other for sleeping. The communal dining, living, and kitchen area is encased in glass and overlooks Dunalley Bay, while the three bedrooms are tucked away down a hallway for privacy.

What is a coastal plantation style?

South of Sydney in the Australian beach town of Bundeena, Grove Architects designed a low-set residence that blends into its lush coastal surroundings with a "green infinity edge" roof and wood cladding. An Amagansett cottage in the Hamptons was transformed with a white and bright Scandinavian-inspired interior. Jessica Helgerson Interior Design freshened up the dated interior, while the architecture firm TBD Design Studio developed a new floor plan. A second-floor hub includes an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living rooms with two bedrooms tucked in the back.

The high price of coastal/waterfront real estate typically requires a narrow property lot that will require a design with a similar narrow floor plan. In fact, with that added height in the design, one of the many perks of a beach home is the beautiful panoramic views from the home’s interior and exterior spaces. Coastal or beach house plans offer the perfect way for families to build their primary or vacation residences near the water, surrounded by naturally serene landscaping. These homes are designed to optimize the advantages of coastal living, such as the expansive views, the wealth of sunlight, and the ocean breezes freely flowing throughout the home.

Two living spaces and two bedrooms were added, and the staircase was opened up to add to the house’s bright and airy nature. The rectilinear structure—a cube topped by a rectangle—houses a unique floor plan with a first-floor covered terrace, dining room, and kitchen. On the top floor, the living room and studio have expansive views of the coast, perched high above the neighboring homes. Coastal home plans, whether found in seaside communities, oceanfront properties, or fishing villages, are some of the most adaptable and dreamed-about home styles. These homes represent a way of life, separate from urban or suburban communities. Their relaxed retreat-styled homes exude a certain charm and sensational opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

Montalba Architects transformed a 1970s bungalow into a contemporary coastal gem.

This collection from John Lewis is just the right amount of seaside without becoming too twee. Note how there is a healthy mix of your obviously sea inspired motifs (starfish, crabs, etc) and non-maritime prints too, to keep the look fresh and modern. A 1950s beach house along Australia’s Tweed Coast got a much-needed renovation from DFJ Architects, who, along with the homeowners, made preservation their main goal. They embraced the home’s existing elements—including its exposed beams, and the large chimney made from local rocks.

On the other end of the coastal design spectrum, the modern coastal style combines the edgy, minimalistic design with the relaxed, airy vibe that can be found on just about any beach. When paired, the result is a simple and soft design that highlights the elements and colors experienced on the coast. Expect to see lots of wood, glass, and natural fibers with color in blue and green hues thrown in as accents. The home’s western orientation gives it expansive water views from the kitchen and dining room, while a skylight fills the center of the home with light. The entrance is on the upper floor, where the bedrooms are tucked away, and the ground floor holds the communal spaces, which are thoughtfully connected to the landscape with expansive glass and decking.

Maine Sailing Vacations & Windjammer Cruises from Camden Maine

windjammer cruise

Swift’s three cabins are double-occupancy, with one that can accommodate 3 twin beds. Singles wishing to sail on the Swift would need to pay the full cabin price unless another single is available to share the cabin. We do have a wait list for persons wishing to travel alone. Windjammer accommodations are rustic by cruise ship standards. The warm glow of varnished wood and unique features of each cabin offer an atmosphere of comfort far different from a luxury liner.

Each Day is an Adventure

Showers can only be taken while the boat is anchored, which is to say after breakfast but before setting sail or after it's anchored (up until 10 p.m.). Crew members made hot water available for those wanting a shower. I didn't bother, choosing to wash my face regularly and double up on deodorant instead. You won't be alone, and nobody on windjammer cruises in Maine will judge you for it. I liked the prospect of sleeping on a boat, especially under the stars, and brought a sleeping bag to try it.

Things To Know Before Taking A Windjammer Cruise

Wildlife can appear at any time, and it’s usually when you least expect it. I found that just looking out at the water was the best method. Seals and porpoises are constantly popping up, sometimes fairly close to the boat. If you stay patient and keep your eyes open, you’ll almost certainly be rewarded with some Maine wildlife sightings. Together, we all stood on the port and starboard sides of the deck and pulled the ropes hand-over-hand to lift those incredible, huge sails.

You’ll Get Used to Everything Very Quickly

The remainder of the time, let the sea be your natural cleanser! You can also pack some essentials like dry shampoo and baby wipes—more on that later. It’s amazing how quickly a person can adjust to a new environment and a new routine.

Swift is a very special vessel designed in 1935 by Murray Peterson, a masterful naval architect famous for his coaster designs. Originally intended as a luxury yacht, she was launched in 1983 after nearly twenty years of love and dedication to build her. We suggest that you reserve your space as soon as you decide on a preferred ship and sail date. We can also provide a trip appropriate for a funeral service or memorial gathering. We look forward to helping you or your organization plan your special event. We work with college alumni and other nonprofit groups to create fundraisers and unique travel opportunities.

windjammer cruise

After a hearty breakfast Monday, we get underway for our short adventure exploring the islands of Maine. Often, people who take the first half pre-season 3-day cruise have such a good time, they ask to stay on for the second half. IF SPACE ALLOWS, you can stay for the second half of the cruise, at an additional discounted fee. Check out this year's sailing dates aboard the J & E Riggin, or plan for next year. Before we set sail from Waterman's Point, the crew set up the ship's chandlery, aka the gift shop.

Day 1: Boarding the J & E Riggin

It was rewarding work and it really makes you appreciate just how many “hands on deck” are necessary to help keep a boat afloat. Nearly all your time awake is spent up on deck relaxing, chatting, dining, and sailing. I have mentioned that I was slightly nervous my first night aboard the boat.

Gather with your shipmates in the galley for an amazing home-cooked meal prepared on our wood fired stove. We arrive back in Rockland before noon on the day of your trip's end date. The crew dropped anchor and began prepping the Savannah, a cat ketch rig carried by the J & E Riggin. When we arrived, the cove was empty except for a larger sailboat already anchored there. Within an hour, though, the Schooner Stephen Taber joined us. Lunch on this lovely day consisted of lobster bisque made with leftover lobster from the previous night, rolls, salad, and luscious lemon bars.

Our Sailing Cruise on a Maine Windjammer, The Lewis R French

It’s about gorgeous scenery, human connection, soul-nourishing meals, and taking time for both adventure and reflection. Our playground is the sparkling sea and the spruce-clad granite islands that rise from it. Wake up to the quiet solitude of Maine’s coast, find renewal in the wind and sun, and surprise yourself as you help steer the ship. Aboard our vessels, with itineraries tossed to the wind, our guests find both a spark of adventure and time to reflect.

The yawl boat is used for runs to shore and when there’s no wind. When we hit the doldrums, the Riggin used its 16-foot diesel yawl boat to push the schooner along. When there was a strong wind, we sailed around 9 miles per hour, or 8 knots, which was a thrill. Taking my first (of hopefully many) windjammer cruises in Maine was the adventure at sea that I didn't know I needed. As we entered Rockland Harbor, the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, shrouded in fog at the start of our trip, was visible. The tight quarters are a part of the windjamming experience.

We will offer three and six-night trips, boarding either on Sundays or Wednesdays. Our season begins June 2 and runs through early October. Plenty of steamed lobster and steak cooked just the way you like them! Weekend & three-day cruises enjoy our Surf & Turf Bar-B-Q onboard your schooner. Don’t forget your binoculars- Nature is all around you on the bay. Curious harbor seals watch as they sun themselves on rocky island points and graceful porpoises arch through the water.

It truly is an elegant form of camping as the ship is an antique. The berths are cozy and include a small sink and window. The room allows for rest and storage, and you are meant to spend your time up top admiring the gorgeous scenery.

The Riggin was built in 1927 as an oyster dredger in the Delaware Bay. She was built by Charles Riggin in Dorchester, New Jersey and named for his sons Jacob and Edward. The Riggin finished first ahead of all the other oyster-schooners in the only formal race ever held in 1929. She was registered as a National Historic Landmark Vessel in 1991. There’s a plaque on the deck commemorating her status.

Hear about the islands, vessels and people of Mid-Coast Maine as well as the many lighthouses we see. Wildlife abounds with birds both ashore and at sea as well as marine mammals. Best of all you can enjoy sailing aboard a schooner built with your comfort in mind. Reduced fares make these trips  the perfect time to vacation in Maine. The beauty of the fall colors adds a new dimension to already breathtaking scenery. Crisp, clear days with brisk winds offer the best sailing of the season.

Travel Documentation: Non-U S. Citizens Carnival Cruise Line

do you need a passport for carnival cruise

As Britain’s oldest colony, Bermuda offers wonderful historic attractions and plenty of opportunities for fun in the sun. Pink-sand beaches, beautiful blue waters and colorful coral reefs deliver the perfect recipe for sunning, swimming, sailing and snorkeling. Passports are required for all travelers, including citizens of U.S. and Canada, who enter or re-enter the United States by air, land or sea. Cruise line policies vary, but generally, children (under 18 years old) must be accompanied by an approved adult (21 years or older) within the same travel group. To verify age requirements and rules for minors, check the age policies of the cruise line you are traveling with. We’ll also spotlight the most sought-after cruise lines among American travelers, delving into what sets each one apart, their distinctive offerings, and the travel documents you’ll need for a hassle-free voyage.

Travel Documents and Online Check-In

Passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from Hawaii or a U.S. territory, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. It’s important to note that while these alternatives to a passport may be acceptable for certain itineraries, having a valid passport is still the best option for international travel. Carnival highly recommends that all guests travel with a passport valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel unless otherwise noted differently. If you’re looking for a different kind of cruise, explore parts of New England and Canada with New York City as an exciting starting and ending point.

For instance, a week-long cruise around the Western Caribbean & Perfect Day, which begins and ends in Miami, Florida, is a closed-loop cruise. It visits several countries like the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, and Grand Cayman, but returns to the original U.S. port. Whether you need a passport for a cruise can be both yes and no—it largely depends on the specifics of your cruise. Guests who are concerned about other guests violating our smoking policy should contact our onboard Guest Services team, so we can address the situation. In keeping with U.S. federal law, the minimum age to purchase tobacco products is 21.

What Documents Do You Need For Carnival Cruise

When traveling outside of the U.S. a passport is always recommended, but cruises are the exception to the rule. As long as you book a closed loop cruise, you can travel to certain destinations without a passport. Because international cruises in Europe and Asia require air travel, these vacations also demand a passport. When embarking on adventures by sea that don’t require a passport, make sure you have the proper cruise documentation. Some cruises might include stops at foreign ports that require a valid passport book to leave the ship.

CardMatch

One of the most important documents you’ll need for your Carnival Cruise is your cruise ticket or boarding pass. This document serves as proof of your reservation and grants you access to the ship. When selecting a travel insurance policy, it’s important to consider the coverage it provides.

Preparing for Your Cruise: Passport Tips and Best Practices

Europe and Transatlantic CruisesU.S Permanent Residents must contact the appropriate embassy or consulate of the countries they will be visiting for specific travel documentation requirements. Domestic CruisesIn addition to required documents stated below, guests must contact the appropriate embassy or consulate of the countries they will be visiting for specific travel documentation requirements. If you find yourself without a passport but in need of one, you would need to contact and locate the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate and request an emergency limited validity passport in order to fly home.

Can I bring my own drinks on a Carnival cruise?

Even though a guest has completed registration using Online Check-in, it is still the responsibility of the guest to present the required travel documents at the time of embarkation. Guests should check with their travel agent and/or government authority to determine the travel documents necessary for each port of call. Any guest without proper documents will not be allowed to board the vessel and no refund of the cruise fare will be issued.

Without these required documents, you will not be able to board your cruise or get back into the United States. All guests must complete their Online Check-in process no later than midnight (Eastern time) prior to their sailing date. Due to security protocol, last minute bookings made within 24 hours of sailing will require guests to undergo a secondary screening. While U.S. citizens aren’t currently required to have passports on closed-loop cruises, Royal Caribbean International highly recommends travelers carry a valid passport book as it is the most reliable form of identification. Additionally, if an unforeseen situation arises where guests have to take a flight to or from the U.S. during their cruise, not possessing a valid passport book could result in substantial delays and challenges. Non-US citizens must have a valid passport to travel on a Carnival Cruise, regardless of the destination.

Any discrepancies or false information can lead to visa denial or even bans from future travel to that country. It’s not acceptable to bring photocopies or scanned copies of your identification documents. It’s important to note that photocopies of these documents are not acceptable. Additionally, minors traveling without both parents will need to bring a notarized letter of consent from the absent parent(s) or legal guardians. Depart from the Californian cities of San Francisco, San Diego or Long Beach for a quick but memorable cruise to the Baja Peninsula in northern Mexico. Along the way, stop by Catalina Island for a day packed full of outdoor enjoyment.

U.S citizens are required to carry a passport book, valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. Visas and/or specific travel documentation may be required for some destinations. On the other hand, open-loop cruises always require a valid U.S. passport for American travelers.

To make things even more confusing, you can get off the ship in port in Vancouver, British Columbia during an Alaska cruise without a passport, but to cross over into the Canadian province by rail, you'll need one. But if you wish to book a rail journey excursion on the White Pass & Yukon Route, which takes you from Alaska into Canada, choose the shorter White Pass Summit tour; you'll need a passport for the longer trips. You may be surprised to learn that U.S. citizens don't need a passport to sail on "closed-loop" cruises with lines like Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and others. Whether you need a passport depends on numerous factors, including where you embark and disembark the ship, where you're sailing to and which line you're cruising with.

Personally, I’d maybe run on Deck 4 in the morning when crowds are nonexistent, but I actually just stuck to the treadmills all trip. After some time in the room, we headed to check out the kids’ clubs. This means you won’t be leaving your little ones alone in the clubs at this time.

When Can I Book Disney Alaska Shore Excursions for my Disney Alaska Cruise?

When we landed, it was on the 650-foot-deep Meade Glacier, but it may as well have been another planet. Confident, reassuring guides were there to explain what we were seeing—and to stop us from walking into danger—as we took in the surreal scenery before flying back to the Disney Wonder. The word “awesome” is egregiously overused, but this was awesome.

Alaskan Cruise Character Meet & Greets

On a return trip to Ketchikan, we’d definitely try and see this, but we felt okay missing it this time around. For many (us included), this was the “it” factor that prompted us to book the excursion. It sort of winds up being $199 for Zoe and $219 for each adult so Zoe can cuddle with a puppy for a few minutes, but learning about sled dog racing is also a pretty quintessential Alaska cruise experience. Sky Peak has a few view points and is the departure point for a few excursions.

Here, they can hang on comfy couches and watch movies on a flat-screen TV, sing top 40 hits on the karaoke machine, or make arts and crafts to bring home to friends. There's also Vibe, an open-plan lounge for teens ages 14 to 17. The lounge is decked out with big-screen TVs, music stations, video consoles, board games, a dance floor and more. These activity centers give older children freedom from parents, while staying under the supervision of trained onboard counselors. The cost is $149 for adults and $74 for children aged 3 to 9 for the basic journey. There are some tourist stores, a couple of bars, and a museum which is worth checking out. It is well worth the short walk into town though if only to imagine what it must have been like to live in one of the Gold Rush towns. This is another town where you dock very close to the center, so it is easy to just walk off the ship and explore. It is a stunningly beautiful port with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

For those who are new to cruising, the shorter 5-night voyages would be a great choice since they offer a glimpse of Disney’s magical experiences without committing to an extended trip. However, experienced cruisers may prefer longer voyages to explore more Alaskan destinations and spend more time in its breathtaking wilderness. Disney Cruise Line typically offers between 15 and 20 departures from Vancouver to Alaska ports between May and September each year.

Excursion options will vary based on your length of cruise and the time of the year. Now, when I play the Moana soundtrack for my daughter on our drive to daycare (her request), she squeals when she hears the songs. She wonders aloud where Captain Mickey and Minnie are, and when Olaf will show up for dinner, along with our waiters, Joseph and I Gede. But the real value, for us as a family, was the more relaxed environment Disney Wonder offered its passengers in Alaska.

Available through Disney Cruise Line or for a cheaper price through Temsco which is the same company that does Disney’s Dog Sledding and Glacier Flightseeing Port Excursion. Guests board a helicopter and are taken to the mountaintops to meet musher dogs, learn about the sleds and take their turn at mushing on their own. A favorite among just about everyone, meeting the dogs, and learning how to mush are experiences you may only get the chance to do in Alaska. This excursion lasts 2 hours 30 min and is the unforgettable experience you’re sure to be writing home about. We had several opportunities throughout the cruise to learn about the landscape, ocean, and wildlife of Alaska due to specially offered Alaskan Naturalist talks.

If this is your first Disney Cruise, you aren’t a Castaway Club member yet, and activities will open 75 days before your cruise. With the cruise booked, the next step is booking your onboard activities and excursions. This is different from and usually earlier than check-in, which we’ll discuss later.

The Disney Wonder boasts a fully-equipped workout facility with stunning ocean views, many group exercise classes, weight machines and cardio equipment. A one-mile walking path surrounds Deck 4, and personal training services are also available to help you work toward your fitness goals. Accessible by road or AquaBus, this place is filled with shops and restaurants to browse during your visit. You can head to the Public Market for a winding array of places to eat, grab a coffee, and buy treats. A classic saloon, the Red Onion Saloon in Skagway is a major stop for many tourists. Serving up pizza, burgers, salads, beer, and more, this restaurant is first come first serve…and you can expect a line. If you wait until later in the day, the crowds will be less heavy. And if you’ve ever wondered what an old-school brothel looks like, there is also a museum at this restaurant upstairs you can access for an extra charge.

So, we booked airline tickets from our home airport to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport ( SEA), which kept us in-country and out of long customs lines. We then headed to the Embassy Suites Hotel, which is located right next door to the King Street Station.

14 Best Adults-only Cruises, According to Travel Experts

The line’s new Explore & Restore program, created in partnership with Chopra, helmed by the renowned Dr. Deepak Chopra, is centered around well-being. Grown-ups can enjoy wellness-centric offerings like Ayurveda-inspired meals, expert-guided workshops, and daily meditation. Azamara’s boutique ships take adult travelers on immersive journeys to some of the most exciting ports on earth, including those in Greece, Turkey, Iceland, Ireland and the Baltic.

Silversea Cruises

One of the more unique things about Anthem of the Seas is its four smaller main dining rooms rather than one enormous main restaurant. Of the four venues, The Grande is the most elegant and tends to draw in more adults. After dinner, head to the theater to see "We Will Rock You," a musical tribute to Queen that originated in London's West End. Rhapsody of the Seas offers some unique sailings, including a two-night sailing from Israel that can be tacked onto longer Mediterranean sailings, such as five-night Greek Isles cruises. For an even longer sailing, consider the 14-night transatlantic cruise, which stops in Alicante, Spain, the Canary Islands and the Bahamas.

Emerald Waterways Cruises

Adults-only cruising is the standard for Viking River cruises, which, as mentioned above, requires all passengers to be 18 and older. The minimum age to sail on some river cruise lines Emerald Waterways, Grand Circle Cruise Line and Scenic) is 12 to 13. Most other lines adhere to rules similar to those of AmaWaterways, which bans children under age 4 and discourages kids younger than 8. Silversea has ten ships (and two more on the way), four of which are luxury expedition class ships.

How we selected the best adult-only cruises

"I've done some personal research. We found that when you put kids in the pool, they scream, and we don't want that." Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruise lines, with a grown-up vibe to boot. Even as many lines double down on the family market, a small group of cruise operators remains all-in on the idea of adult-only cruises. Holland America tends to cater to an older demographic, but it does have exceptional service and dining at sea. Guests will enjoy top-notch live music with blues and classic rock genres.

Best cruise line for budget travelers

Grownups can also enjoy evening dance parties and movies under the stars on the pool deck as the ship sails to its next port of call. Chops Grille, the onboard steakhouse, provides an intimate setting for a romantic dinner for two. Azamara Cruises is another luxury cruise line that's a great option for adult cruisers looking to have a high-end cruising experience that parallels what you would find at a high-end boutique hotel. Because retirees have more time to travel than other cruisers, Holland America offers longer itineraries to more unique locations, like South America and Antarctica.

There are far fewer port options available on the west coast of North America compared to in the Caribbean. This means Navigator of the Seas typically sails the same few itineraries year round, but that doesn’t mean the itineraries aren’t enticing. From the bar, parents can supervise their kids at the nearby Splashaway Bay pool area, meaning you won’t need to sacrifice your own fun while keeping an eye on your kids.

All-Inclusive Cruise Lines That Aren't Adults-Only

Instead, even established travelers might find some of Seabourn’s itineraries to be impressive, especially sailed by its expedition arm. Focusing on the ends of the earth, Seabourn expedition cruises reach extremes like East Greenland, the Northwest Passage, Antarctica and the wild Kimberley region of Australia. While some of these voyages are a manageable 10 or 15 days, the focus is on the history and exploration of the destination and not as much focus on fun in the sun. Seabourn passengers can pass the time onboard with an espresso or martini at any of the onboard bars or lounges or arrange for an indulgent ensuite bubble bath—rubber ducky not included.

By eliminating or scaling back services for children, the cruises are less appealing for families as they will have to tend to their kids. However, since its inception, Royal Caribbean International has marketed itself as one of the best cruise ship lines for adults. This cruise line does not accept children over six months, and there are limited children’s programs onboard. It does not offer kids’ entertainment, supervision, or childcare services. While children can board the ship, there are no activities for them to enjoy, limiting the number of families who would embark on this cruise. Azamara discourages families with children under 18 as the atmosphere and experiences onboard cater directly to adults.

The best adults-only cruises to try if you can’t stand being around kids on vacation

While Celebrity appeals to a wide range of travelers, they specifically attract adults and couples in their mid-30s to late-50s. Here are the 13 best cruises for adults who are looking for some time away from children. 7-day Dreams of Tahiti on the 148-passenger sailing ship Wind Spirit, all-inclusive from $3,122. Likewise, when British billionaire Richard Branson launched the first ship of his Virgin Voyages cruise brand two years ago, it was with no one under age 18 allowed onboard. The cruise line later riffed on the subject with ads showing kids very displeased that they couldn’t get in on the fun with grownups. Started in 2010, Royal Caribbean Blog offers daily coverage of news and information related to the Royal Caribbean cruise line along with other relevant topics of cruising, such as entertainment, news, photo updates and more.

Tips, nonalcoholic drinks, a limited menu of alcoholic beverages (select standard liquors and beers, plus house wines), self-service laundry and the AzAmazing Evening are all included on every cruise. Excursions, transfers, premium alcohol, internet and specialty dining generally cost extra on Azamara. Note that while some of these lines are strictly adults-only, others are adults-oriented, meaning that they may have some well-behaved older children on board during school holidays but otherwise, rarely do. Most are small ship experiences with geared-to-grownup itineraries spanning the globe and leaning into all-inclusiveness and luxury—all the better to admire when it’s all about you.

Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G. Additionally, per Clabbers, the entertainment offerings are best described as “atypical and engaging” and include pool parties, private karaoke studios, and drag queen cabaret. Of course, we’d also be remiss not to mention the onboard tattoo parlors, aptly called Squid Ink. These expert-approved cruise lines are perfect for your next adults-only getaway. While this cruise still allows children, there are enough options for kids to enjoy that it feels like an adults-only cruise.

Viking Ocean Cruises offers an inclusive, engaging experience onboard their ships that visit unique destinations around the world. Because Viking's ships are smaller than other ships at sea, they can call at more exotic ports. Moreover, you will want to avoid sailings over spring break and other holidays, as these are popular cruises for those sailing with kids since they are out of school. Longer sailings and smaller ships will be more popular with adult cruisers rather than families, too.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere of Royal Caribbean ships is always fun and classy without being too wild nor too stuffy. Your other passengers range everything from families (fewer if you sail during the school year) all the way to older couples. There are also tons of places to eat and drink on the ship — including lots of different types of food for any appetite. With over 25 ships in its fleet, Royal Caribbean has a ship for every type of traveler, not just families with young kids. Whether you're looking for fewer upper-deck attractions and more places to relax outside or upscale dining and entertainment for a date night after an exciting day in port, this cruise line has you covered.

Only a handful of cruise lines ban children from their ships and promise cruises for grown-ups — perhaps the most notable being cruise newcomer Virgin Voyages and fast-growing Viking. No sailing is complete without at least one visit to the state-of-the-art Aurōra spa, which offers everything from Dysport injections and IV treatments to acupuncture and salt scrubs. Crystal currently sails six continents (all but Antarctica), and, although you can’t go wrong with any of the itineraries, the 123-night 2025 World Cruise — which visits 62 ports in 31 countries — is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Therefore, guests aboard these ships can expect to see very few, if any, children. This makes it an enjoyable, relaxing vacation away from home, allowing you to recharge and re-energize. Many of them cater directly to what adults enjoy, bringing a range of culinary experiences, exotic destinations, and learning experiences to their clientele.
